2016 Music Concert

On Wednesday, December 7th, our talented blackhawks showed their musicality in their 2016 Winter Concert. The concert was split into two different parts. The choral performances were first. The high school choir kicked off the concert with their songs, “Ding-A-Ding-A-Ding,” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” and “Ching-A-Ring Chaw.” The concert then moved on to the Middle School Combined Choir. They sang “Somewhere Out There” and “Perfect Christmas Night.” The Acahawks brought in the end of the choral half of the show. They sang “Carol of the Bells,” “Miserere Nobis,” and “Season of Love.” Gracie Glynn and Colton Nelson, Members of the sixth grade band, played “Aura Lee” during the intermission. As the band portion of the concert began, the sixth grade band played, “When the Saints,” “Old MacDonald Had a Band,” “Ode to Joy,” and “Jingle Bells on the Housetop.” The seventh and eighth grade band then played “Frosty Bells Rock.” The High School Band then played, “A Merry Christmas Medley.” The concert was brought to a close with the junior high and high school combined band, who played “Everything for a Dream,” and “Clarinets Packing Up Early.” It was a great concert, conducted by Miss Given and Mrs. Kilgore, accompanied by Mrs. Young.

Student Spotlight

Amina Scaletty

Amina Scaletty is a sophomore at Adrian High School. She suggests that incoming Freshmen balance easy classes with more challenging ones, and take two classes they never thought to take before. Her favorite class is College Prep with Mrs. Adkins, AKA Swick. Winning Courtwarming has been her favorite high school memory so far. “Seeing so many different people who were so happy for me was so encouraging,” She says.  In  her downtime, Amina enjoys reading, writing, and participating in her clubs and other extracurricular activities.

HAPPY

:) HAPPY= Helping Anyone Promote A Positive You

On December 2, HAPPY had their first party of the year in Mr. Mack’s room. Most of the old members came and even some potential new comers. At HAPPY parties, there are 3 things always promised: food, movies, and fun.

HAPPY is a fairly new club that has come to Adrian school. The club started last year, where member numbers were at the highest the club has seen so far, and members funded Cake Day and Positive Post-its. The Positive Post-its was a project that had the members of HAPPY post notes on the lockers of high school students. They had funny, positive, or encouraging messages on them for as bit of humor.  We are hoping to do that again this year.
Along with those fun projects, HAPPY also picks up recycling every other Friday all over the school. Not only is this promoting recycling school-wide, but it is also helping the earth.

Seeing that there are no dues, any high school student who wants to join HAPPY, there are meetings every other Thursday at 7:30 in Mr. Mack’s room. The next HAPPY meeting will be Thursday, December 8th, feel free to come and check it out. :)

Pleasant Hill Wrestling Tournament

Pleasant Hill Wrestling Tournament
December 2nd through December 3rd was the first wrestling tournament of the year. The Steve Leslie Invitational was held at the Pleasant Hill High School this past weekend. All eight of the Adrian Varsity Wrestlers did very well this weekend. The participating wrestlers were Tommy Weeks, Carter Vickers, Myles Stone, Colbey Fenton, Zachary Shannon, James Keating, Constantin Ochsner, and Hayden Stark. Zachary Shannon, Tommy Weeks, and Carter Vickers all made it to the championship matches for their separate weight classes. Senior Tommy Weeks got second in the 113 weight class. When asked about this past weekend Tommy explained, "It was a great way to end my last first tournament". Zachary added to that saying, "Getting second at the first tournament of the year hopefully means a great season ahead". Carter placed 2nd at the 120 weight class while Zachary also placed 2nd at the 145 weight class. All of the boys wrestled great this past weekend and we are very excited to watch the wrestlers excel through the rest of the season.

Picking a College

Why is picking a college so stressful? There are so many things that tie into picking a college. Some of these include, distance, money, and even the size of the school. So let’s talk about how to destress your college choice a little bit.
First off, distance. Many people are nervous to move far away from their families. Not wanting to move far away is very common. You’re used to growing up with people there to help you and take care of you, but when you’re off at college it’s all on you. So what if you get homesick? There are many colleges that aren’t too far away that you would be able to come home to see your family. A list of a few is provided below:
  1. Avila (Martin City, 40 min)
  2. Longview (Lee’s Summit, 40 min)
  3. Crowder (Nevada, 40 min)
Now let’s discuss money. College is VERY expensive. A lot of people stress over the money and think there is no way they can go. There is always a way, if you’re willing to work for it. There are so many scholarships, for so many things, they’re almost endless! Whether they be for a certain major, college, GPA, etc., there’s always going to be a scholarship out there for you to apply for. Another big money source is grants. Filling out the FAFSA, is a must! You can get a lot of money out of just doing this simple step, depending on what you qualify for. Some Scholarship sites to look for are listed below:
And finally, the size of the school. Bigger schools can be intimidating, especially if coming from a small school. There are many people who have made this jump, and it went over just fine, but this isn’t the case for everyone. There are many small schools around in our area, as well as big schools, whichever you prefer. Lists of both are provided below:
Small Schools
  1. Avila (1,710)
  2. Fort Scott (Undergrad: 2,000)
  3. Longview (3,000)
Big Schools
  1. MU (Undergrad: 28,000)
  2. MSU (26,000)
  3. UCM (14,000)
Hopefully these couple of tips will help destress your choosing of a college! Good Luck!

Every Day Book Review

Every Day, by David Levithan, is about the life of A. A is the same person, just in a different body every day. All is semi alright in the life of A, until he gets in the body of Justin. A kid in a relationship with a girl named Rhiannon, A continues on as Justin and gives Rhiannon one of the best days she has had in a long time- if not the best day. At midnight, A changes bodies and realizes something. As the days go on, A can't stop thinking about Rhiannon and tries to find ways to get to her. A realizes, Rhiannon is the love of A’s life. In a series of ups and downs of A changing bodies every day while constantly trying to get Rhiannon to feel the same, there is many struggles. Can A and Rhiannon make it work?
I give Every Day like 12 of 10 on a scale of greatness. Amina as a witness, after reading this book, I hugged the book and laid on the hallway floor. I then promptly requested Mrs. Cochran to get the next book, Another Day.
