Picking a College

Why is picking a college so stressful? There are so many things that tie into picking a college. Some of these include, distance, money, and even the size of the school. So let’s talk about how to destress your college choice a little bit.
First off, distance. Many people are nervous to move far away from their families. Not wanting to move far away is very common. You’re used to growing up with people there to help you and take care of you, but when you’re off at college it’s all on you. So what if you get homesick? There are many colleges that aren’t too far away that you would be able to come home to see your family. A list of a few is provided below:
  1. Avila (Martin City, 40 min)
  2. Longview (Lee’s Summit, 40 min)
  3. Crowder (Nevada, 40 min)
Now let’s discuss money. College is VERY expensive. A lot of people stress over the money and think there is no way they can go. There is always a way, if you’re willing to work for it. There are so many scholarships, for so many things, they’re almost endless! Whether they be for a certain major, college, GPA, etc., there’s always going to be a scholarship out there for you to apply for. Another big money source is grants. Filling out the FAFSA, is a must! You can get a lot of money out of just doing this simple step, depending on what you qualify for. Some Scholarship sites to look for are listed below:
And finally, the size of the school. Bigger schools can be intimidating, especially if coming from a small school. There are many people who have made this jump, and it went over just fine, but this isn’t the case for everyone. There are many small schools around in our area, as well as big schools, whichever you prefer. Lists of both are provided below:
Small Schools
  1. Avila (1,710)
  2. Fort Scott (Undergrad: 2,000)
  3. Longview (3,000)
Big Schools
  1. MU (Undergrad: 28,000)
  2. MSU (26,000)
  3. UCM (14,000)
Hopefully these couple of tips will help destress your choosing of a college! Good Luck!
