Senior year when planning to further your education in the next step, scholarships will be your best friend. (Unless you're a millionaire and can pay for college out of pocket, but let's face it, you most likely wouldn't be going to a little public school in the town of Adrian if that was the case). So... what even is a scholarship? Google defines a scholarship as, “a grant or payment made to support a student's education, awarded on the basis of academic or other achievements.” They could be worth $50 or even $20,000! The amounts range from great depths, but every little bit helps.
Most scholarships aren't just handed out to any kid in the world, they're given to kids who take the time to fill out the application, including sometimes writing an essay to go along with it. “So, what if I'm not good at writing essays?” If you're not good at writing essays that doesn't mean you just skip past the scholarships that require essays, that just means you try your best. For all you know, there could just be one other applicant running against you, and they could be even worse at writing essays! Having a teacher, parent, or friend look over and revise your essay is always a good suggestion to do. (And no, that doesn't mean you just have someone write the whole essay for you).
So where can you find scholarships? There are many different places to look. There are local, state, and national scholarships. Mrs. Glynn’s website has a variety of good scholarships to pick from. Also, USA Today College suggests the top 5 scholarship sites to look at are as following: Unigo, Fastweb, Cappex, Chegg, and The College Board. On most of these sites, they ask that you input some information about yourself to help match scholarships to you. Otherwise, you’ll be going through thousands of scholarships that don’t even pertain to you.
Overall, scholarships are a very helpful tool. They help pay for college and take a little load of stress off of your parents. Even getting a lot of little ones can really add up to equal a great amount. There are many different places to search for scholarships. So get out there and start applying!
