Building a Lego-cy of Learning

By Amina Scaletty and Rachel Mann

Children tend to learn best by using free play to teach themselves, and this is a concept that Mrs. Karen Cochran, school librarian, seems to understand well. She taught kids to use their imagination with Lego blocks to build scenes or objects from a book they had recently read as a class- and they responded with creativity and excitement.
Mrs. Thomspon’s Kindergartener Erin Welliver tells us her thoughts about the experience. “It was fun! I made an elephant!” The rest of the kindergarten class seemed to agree that using the Legos was a great idea.
Mrs. Cochran says that the book entitled “Get out of my Bath” by Brita Teckentrup was a good choice because it “engages students in new ways, allowing them to become immersed in the story.” It certainly seemed to go well, and she plans to use them again in the future.
Engaging students in this way is a revolutionary idea, and our school is proud to be able to use it.
